Dexcom is no longer just building diabetes sensors. It's building a health platform.

Dexcom's latest announcements aren't just about a smaller sensor or longer wear. From G8 and hybrid closed-loop technology to Stelo, digital health and the wider CGM community, Summer 2026 reveals a company whose ambitions increasingly extend beyond diabetes sensors and towards a connected health platform.

Over the past three months, Dexcom has revealed the next-generation G8, expanded the longer-wear G7 internationally, strengthened its position in hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery and continued investing in consumer health with Stelo. At first glance these appear to be separate developments. Together, however, they reveal a company whose ambitions now extend far beyond manufacturing CGMs and towards building a connected health platform centred on glucose data.

From CGM company to health platform

For much of the past decade, Dexcom's reputation has been built on helping people living with diabetes monitor their glucose more accurately and conveniently. Every new product launch has typically focused on making sensors smaller, more accurate or easier to wear.

But, this summer's announcements take a different approach.

Rather than announcing a single breakthrough product, Dexcom has gradually revealed a strategy that spans prescription diabetes care, hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery, metabolic health, digital health and consumer wellness. The individual announcements are important, but together they suggest the company increasingly sees CGMs as the starting point for a much broader ecosystem rather than the finished product.

Fundamentally that will change the way Dexcom competes. Future success may depend not only on producing the best sensor, but also on building the software, services, partnerships and connected technologies that surround it.

Dexcom G8 is the foundation, not the destination

Dexcom's biggest product announcement came during its Investor Day in May, when it revealed the first detailed information about Dexcom G8. The next-generation sensor is expected to be around 50 per cent smaller than G7, target a 15-day wear period and introduce a new adaptive sensing platform designed to improve consistency throughout the life of the sensor.

Those headline specifications naturally attracted most of the attention, but they are only part of the story. Throughout its presentations, Dexcom repeatedly described G8 as the platform on which future innovation will be built rather than simply the successor to G7. The company's longer-term roadmap includes ambitions for multi-analyte sensing, with biomarkers such as ketones among those under investigation. Although these capabilities remain part of Dexcom's future vision rather than confirmed features of the first commercial G8 release, they demonstrate that the company is thinking beyond glucose monitoring alone.

Although attention naturally focused on the smaller size and planned 15-day wear, G8 is perhaps better understood as the foundation for Dexcom's next generation of connected technologies. The sensor itself remains important, but it increasingly appears to be only one part of a much wider strategy.

Dexcom's ambitions are expanding beyond diabetes

Over the past three months, Dexcom has reinforced its strategy of expanding beyond traditional diabetes management. Alongside revealing G8, the company has continued rolling out Stelo, its glucose biosensor for people with type 2 diabetes who are not using insulin, prediabetes and metabolic health, while also becoming the first participant selected for the US Food and Drug Administration's TEMPO Digital Health Technologies Pilot Programme. The initiative will explore how wearable technologies could support earlier assessment and intervention for conditions such as type 2 diabetes, signalling growing interest in using glucose data before diabetes is diagnosed rather than simply managing it afterwards.

These developments build on Dexcom's broader vision of serving a much wider audience than people using insulin. Alongside its established CGMs for people with diabetes, the company is increasingly investing in consumer health, primary care and digital health, positioning glucose data as a tool for understanding overall metabolic health as well as supporting day-to-day diabetes management. Rather than expanding into unrelated markets, the latest announcements suggest Dexcom sees continuous glucose monitoring as the foundation of a broader connected health platform that could support people at different stages of their health journey.

The UK picture

hile many of Dexcom's newest announcements remain international, UK users are already seeing part of this strategy through wider adoption of hybrid closed-loop systems and increasing integration between CGMs and insulin pumps.

Dexcom ONE+ and Dexcom G7 continue to be the company's principal NHS continuous glucose monitoring systems. Dexcom G7 also plays an increasingly important role in hybrid closed-loop therapy, integrating with compatible insulin pumps such as Omnipod 5 to allow insulin delivery to be adjusted automatically using real-time glucose readings.

As NHS access to hybrid closed-loop systems continues to expand, compatibility between pumps and sensors is becoming increasingly important. Choosing one device may influence the other, meaning the future of diabetes technology is being shaped not only by the quality of individual products but also by how effectively they work together.

Although Dexcom G7 15 Day has now begun expanding internationally, there is currently no confirmed launch date for the UK, where the existing 10-day G7 remains the company's flagship premium CGM.

Health Canada has authorised Dexcom G7 15 Day for adults living with diabetes, marking the first expansion of the longer-wear system beyond the United States. The approval provides up to 15.5 days of glucose readings between sensor changes and demonstrates Dexcom's continuing international rollout of longer-wear technology.

Dexcom Warriors continues to grow

Dexcom has continued expanding its Dexcom Warriors programme alongside partnerships with organisations including Diabetes UK, Breakthrough T1D, DigiBete and the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation. These initiatives aim to raise awareness of diabetes technology while giving people opportunities to share their experiences of living with diabetes.

The next battle isn't just over sensors

Only a few years ago, Dexcom's business could largely be described as designing CGMs for people living with diabetes. Today, that description feels increasingly incomplete.

The company's products and partnerships now span type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery, primary care, consumer wellness, digital health and connected wearable technology. Rather than building devices for a single medical condition, Dexcom increasingly appears to be creating a platform centred on glucose information and the decisions that information can support.

That shift matters because it changes the way the company competes. Future success may depend not only on producing accurate sensors, but also on developing the software, services, partnerships and digital infrastructure that surround them.

The role of the wider CGM community

As Dexcom's ambitions grow, so too does the importance of the wider CGM community. Manufacturer-led initiatives such as Dexcom Warriors provide valuable opportunities to raise awareness of diabetes technology and encourage people to share their experiences. They also sit alongside a much broader network of diabetes charities, healthcare professionals, independent publishers, peer support groups and online communities that continue to play an essential role in helping people navigate life with diabetes.

Each contributes something different. Manufacturers understandably focus on education around their own products, while independent communities often provide broader discussions about everyday challenges, competing technologies and real-world experiences. As diabetes technology becomes increasingly connected, access to trusted, independent information may become just as important as access to the technology itself.

A platform built on data

One of the clearest themes to emerge from Dexcom's Summer 2026 announcements is that the company increasingly sees glucose data as the foundation of a much broader health platform. From G8 and future multi-analyte sensing to Stelo, hybrid closed-loop technology and participation in the US FDA's TEMPO Digital Health Technologies Pilot Programme, Dexcom's strategy is no longer centred solely on producing better glucose sensors for diabetes management. It is increasingly focused on how health data can be collected, connected and used across different technologies and stages of care.

That creates significant opportunities. Connected devices can help automate insulin delivery, provide more personalised insights and potentially support earlier identification of health risks. At the same time, it also raises important questions about interoperability, user choice and data ownership. As continuous glucose monitors become part of larger digital ecosystems, the value increasingly lies not only in the sensor itself, but in the data it generates and the platforms that interpret it.

For people living with diabetes, this makes it more important than ever that health data remains portable, accessible and under their control. As manufacturers continue building increasingly connected ecosystems, future competition may depend as much on openness and trust as on sensor accuracy or wear time.

What hasn't changed?

Despite the pace of international announcements, the immediate picture for most people in the UK remains reassuringly familiar. Dexcom G7 continues as a 10-day sensor, Dexcom G8 has not yet launched commercially and Stelo is not currently available in Britain. For most NHS users, Dexcom ONE+ and Dexcom G7 remain the products they are most likely to encounter through routine diabetes care.

The real Summer 2026 update is therefore not that people suddenly have new devices in their hands. Instead, it is that Dexcom has provided a much clearer view of the direction it intends to take over the coming years.

One thing became increasingly clear over the summer. Dexcom is no longer defining itself simply by the sensor someone wears on their arm.

The company's announcements point towards a future where the sensor becomes one part of a wider platform that includes insulin pumps, smartphones, digital health services, artificial intelligence and, eventually, multiple biomarkers. That could make diabetes technology more useful than ever before, but it could also reshape competition across the industry. Future leaders may be judged less by who builds the smallest sensor and more by who creates the most trusted, connected and open ecosystem around it.

For people living with diabetes, that is an exciting prospect. It also makes it more important than ever that choice, interoperability and control remain firmly in the hands of the people generating the data in the first place.

In the UK, another important milestone is just around the corner. The latest NHS prescribing data is due later this month and should provide an updated picture of CGM use across England.
